A DAY IN THE LIFE

Farming is a vocation, an adventure, a labor and, sometimes it seems like a work of magic. Everything affects everything else, the bees, the sun, the sky, the creek, the cows, the people, the land. Before the time of agribusinesses and agriculture programs in universities, farming was a culture, was people who passed intimacy with the land from one generation to the next. These are our stories.

Ok, so clearly I am the worst blogger in the world. anyone who knows me understands why, but for those who don’t know me, I’m a super busy woman! The farm had one of the best years yet last year. Our crops all did well, with the exception of the broccoli. The bunnies kept eating the broccoli before it could grow big enough to produce! We had very healthy wild bunnies though! Every year we learn more, and it shows in the food we are able to grow. Farming well means always learning! Our cow population has grown to a robust 19, and we are expecting several more to be born next year. We have added two sheep to our animal collection, and they are both pregnant. We have also ordered 50 new chicken babies for the Spring. It should be a busy Spring, to say the least! Our straw bale greenhouse, built almost 3 years ago, is such a wonderful addition to the farm. It not only is extremely energy efficient, but such a beautiful structure as well. It is the perfect environment to grow plants. It is warm and inviting, and the walls feel alive. It enables us to start crops earlier and to produce some winter greens and herbs. We love it so much that we are in the process of building a house to match. We had so many great employees last year, it will be hard to replace them this year. Each year brings new adventures, friends, and experiences. That is the beauty of farming - no two years are the same!
